Shockwave Therapy for Knee Pain Near Iowa City

Stairs, squats, getting out of a chair, the first mile of a run — knees tend to announce themselves during the specific movements you care about.

Direct answer

Knee Pain: the short answer

Knee pain has many possible causes, from patellar tendinopathy to osteoarthritis to meniscal and ligament injury. Shockwave therapy has been studied most in tendon-related knee pain and in knee osteoarthritis, with mixed results, and it is not automatically appropriate for every knee condition.

  • Pain going up or down stairs
  • Pain with squatting or kneeling
  • Aching after runs or long walks
  • Stiffness getting up from a chair
  • Pain at the front of the knee below the kneecap
  • Knee pain that returns whenever activity increases

Knee pain is not one condition

Front-of-knee pain in an active adult often involves the patellar tendon or the patellofemoral joint. Deep, diffuse pain with morning stiffness in an older adult may involve osteoarthritis. Twisting injuries raise the question of meniscal or ligament involvement.

These are meaningfully different problems, and lumping them together as 'knee pain' is the fastest way to choose the wrong treatment.

Where shockwave therapy has been studied

In patellar tendinopathy ('jumper's knee'), a 2022 meta-analysis suggested a beneficial effect on pain, while a randomised trial in athletes treated during their competitive season found no benefit over control. In knee osteoarthritis, randomised work has compared focused and radial shockwave delivery, with both associated with symptomatic improvement — but without a sham arm.

That is an honest summary: promising in places, inconsistent in others.

Why evaluation comes first

SoftWave® is not automatically appropriate for every knee condition, and some knee problems need imaging or an orthopaedic opinion before any soft-tissue treatment is considered. Whether shockwave therapy is appropriate depends on your diagnosis, your history and an in-person evaluation.

We do not publish treatment protocols, visit counts or outcome promises for this condition. Those depend on your evaluation at Total Health Chiropractic.
